When is the best time to visit the Galápagos Islands? It is one of the most common questions we hear from travelers planning a trip to Galápagos. The short answer is: there is no single best month to visit. Galápagos is a year-round destination, and each season offers something different.
Your ideal time to visit depends on what matters most to you—warm weather and water, snorkeling, surfing, wildlife, hiking, fewer crowds, or simply finding the best overall conditions for your trip.
Galápagos Weather: Two Main Seasons
Galápagos has two main climate patterns: a warm and wet season and a cooler and drier season. The transition between them is gradual, so the weather doesn’t suddenly change on a particular date.
Warm and Wet Season: December to May
The warm season generally begins around December and continues through May. During these months, temperatures are warmer both on land and in the water, with more sunshine and occasional rain.
Rain is especially important in the highlands, where the vegetation becomes much greener and more abundant. This creates excellent conditions for land-based wildlife, including giant tortoises and many species of birds.
For travelers who enjoy being in the water, the warmer sea temperatures can make swimming, snorkeling and other water activities more comfortable.
The warm season is also an important time for surfing. On San Cristóbal, northern swells are generally more consistent from December through March, although surf conditions vary throughout the year.
Cool and Dry Season: June to November
From approximately June through November, cooler waters associated with the Humboldt Current bring nutrient-rich water into the Galápagos Marine Reserve. Air temperatures are generally cooler, skies can be cloudier, and the coast is often drier.
The cooler water supports abundant marine life and can make this an especially interesting time for travelers who want to focus on marine wildlife and snorkeling. A wetsuit is recommended for most visitors during this time.
Don’t let the name “dry season” fool you into expecting completely sunny weather. On the higher parts of the islands, the cooler season can bring garúa, a fine mist or drizzle caused by the interaction of cooler air and ocean conditions.
Both seasons offer excellent opportunities to experience Galápagos. The difference is more about what kind of conditions you prefer than whether one season is good and the other is bad.

Best Time to Visit Galápagos for Snorkeling
There is good snorkeling in Galápagos throughout the year.
If you prefer warmer water, December through May may be more comfortable. From June through November, the water is cooler, but the nutrient-rich conditions can bring abundant marine life.
If snorkeling is a major priority, we recommend choosing your travel dates based on the specific locations you want to visit as well as the season. Conditions can vary considerably between islands and individual visitor sites.
Best Time to Visit Galápagos for Surfing
Galápagos is a year-round surfing destination, but the direction of the swells changes throughout the year.
On San Cristóbal Island, northern swells generally provide the best conditions from approximately December through March, while southern swells become more important during the rest of the year.
This means there is no single “surf season” for Galápagos. The best time depends on which breaks you want to surf and the type of swell you’re looking for.
Best Time to Visit Galápagos for Wildlife
One of the best things about Galápagos is that wildlife viewing is excellent year-round. You don’t need to visit during one particular season to have an incredible wildlife experience.
However, different species and behaviors are more noticeable at different times of year. The seasonal changes in ocean temperature, food availability and vegetation influence breeding, nesting, feeding and other wildlife activity.
For example, sea lion breeding activity on San Cristóbal generally occurs from August through January, with particularly high activity around October and November.
Marine iguana hatchlings also begin emerging from their nests in late April, making this another interesting seasonal wildlife event.
If there is a particular animal you hope to see, it is worth researching its seasonal behavior before choosing your travel dates.
What About Crowds and High Season?
Galápagos does not have a traditional “low season” in the same way as some other destinations, but visitor numbers do vary throughout the year.
July and August, Christmas and New Year, Easter week, and major Ecuadorian holidays are typically busy travel periods. Flights, hotels and popular tours can fill up quickly during these dates, so advance planning is especially important.
If you have flexibility, traveling outside the major holiday periods can mean a quieter experience and more availability.
So, When Should You Visit the Galápagos?
The good news is that there really isn’t a bad time to visit Galápagos.
Choose December through May if you prefer warmer temperatures, warmer water and greener landscapes.
Choose June through November if you prefer cooler weather and are particularly interested in marine wildlife and nutrient-rich waters.
